10/23/2025:
Following nearly eight hours of bargaining on October 20, there continues to be a significant gap between the wage proposals presented by AGMA and Management. AGMA Artists are now not working again until November 11 (as we only have 37 guaranteed paid weeks) and still need your support in our fight for a fair contract! If you have already sent a letter to NYCB Leadership: Thank you! Feel free to send more.
10/12/2025:
The Dancers and Stage Managers of New York City Ballet are officially asking our supporters for help! Given the current state of negotiations, we boycotted the red carpet and dinner at the Fall Fashion Gala on October 8. Following the boycott, Management and AGMA returned to the table in between performances on October 11.
The result? Management still has not offered fair wages.
Reality check:
- Artists took a 4% pay cut during the pandemic to sustain the company.
- Since then, inflation is up 22% in the NYC metro area.
- Our wages have only increased by 9.7% net over five and a half years.
- Artists only work 37 weeks out of the year at NYCB.
- Nearly half (48%) of our take-home pay goes to housing.
- The cost of living keeps climbing; groceries, rent, transportation, and other essentials are up across the board.
Our pay shouldn’t fall further behind every year. We’re simply asking for wages that reflect the reality of life in this city and that allow us to stay here and continue working.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
As we prepare for future negotiations, we need your support! Please send letters to New York City Ballet’s leadership, asking them to offer wages that address the steep increase in the cost of living in New York City. Your support is crucial to ensure that New York City Ballet continues to be a world-class organization where the dedicated, talented artists who delight, amaze, and inspire audiences have the resources to sustain our careers.
How to send a letter:
We have launched an Action Network letter-writing campaign, and you can send a pre-drafted email in under five minutes. You can send it as is or personalize it any way you’d like. However, PLEASE enter your own personalized SUBJECT LINE to avoid it being sent to spam.
10/8/2025: WE ARE NOT ATTENDING TONIGHT’S FALL FASHION GALA
October 8 is New York City Ballet’s annual Fall Fashion Gala. And while we wish we could celebrate with the donors who help make this institution so great, the artists can not celebrate when our needs have not been met.
The letter we sent to management a short while ago is now published in full below:
Letter to NYCB Management
Dear Jon and Wendy,
We are writing to inform you that we have collectively chosen not to attend the red carpet or the dinner at the Fall Fashion Gala tonight in light of the current state of negotiations for a successor collective bargaining agreement with NYCB.
Since we began bargaining in May, our goal has been to improve our collective bargaining agreement to prioritize the well-being and financial security of AGMA Artists. We have approached this negotiation with a problem-solving attitude, listening and responding to management’s feedback to find solutions that meet the needs of all parties. While we appreciate the many tentative agreements we have reached, we are concerned by the lack of progress in bargaining on compensation that reflects the rising costs of inflation.
During our last bargaining session on Monday, October 6, we reduced our original economic proposals to present an economic package that balances NYCB’s interests and moves us closer to ensuring we can afford to live in New York City and do our best work for the company.
However, management’s negotiating team has responded to our economic proposal with proposed wage increases that fail to address the steep and ongoing cost-of-living increases in New York City. Their proposed percentage increases fall far short of what AGMA Artists at nearly any other dance company nationwide have secured over the past twelve months, despite most of those companies operating without the financial stability that NYCB enjoys. In short, this current proposal does not reflect the value, dedication, or professional expertise that NYCB dancers and stage managers bring to this institution.
We ask you to please reflect on the company’s priorities and consider the dancers and stage managers. We hope for your understanding and support as we continue working toward a resolution that serves all parties fairly and promptly.
Respectfully,
The AGMA Artists of New York City Ballet
