AGMA Ratifies Three-Year Agreement with Detroit Opera

AGMA’s new three-year agreement with Detroit Opera was approved by AGMA members and ratified by AGMA’s Board of Governors on March 23, 2026.

This contract delivers major increases in compensation, stronger workplace protections, and meaningful improvements to working conditions. This contract also establishes new standards around equity, safety, and the use of technology, especially AI, in the workplace.

CONTRACT HIGHLIGHTS

Economics

  • Increases in compensation and benefits ranging from 7% up to 65% over the life of the agreement
  • Significant dollar increases in Year 1 for Principal Artists, Assistant Stage Managers, and Assistant Stage Directors
  • Per Performance Principal Artists will receive:
    • 20% of their contracted fee upon arrival in Years 1 and 2
    • 25% upon arrival in Year 3
  • All compensation increases are retroactive to November 1, 2025
  • Payroll errors of $25 or more must be corrected within four business days
  • New $75 Tech Fee per production for Production Staff required to use personal technology

Technology and A.I. Protections

  • New provisions protecting AGMA Artists from replacement by artificial intelligence
  • Clear recognition of emerging technology and its impact on Artists’ work

Chorus and Scheduling Improvements

  • Creation of a Core Chorus beginning in Year 2
    • 20 Choristers in Year 2 and 28 in Year 3
  • Established list of holidays where no musical rehearsals will be scheduled and best efforts made to avoid other services
  • Six hours of paid sick leave per production for Choristers

Production Staff and Stage Management

  • Clearer definitions of responsibilities for Stage Managers, Assistant Stage Managers, and Assistant Stage Directors
  • Guaranteed engagement of an Assistant Stage Director for every production

Working Conditions

  • Clearer language around meal breaks and rest periods
  • Stronger day-to-day protections for Artists across departments

I.D.E.A. and Safety

  • A comprehensive I.D.E.A. document has been added to the contract, aligned with AGMA and OPERA America standards
  • Detailed policies addressing discrimination and harassment, including clear procedures for response
  • New provisions for gender diverse dressing and restroom facilities
  • Dedicated space for nursing parents
