5/22/2023 – The wave of artists organizing across the country continues as the artists of Opera Colorado have signed cards to form a union and join the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA).

“Opera professionals see the value in collective power and speaking with one voice. We are thrilled to have artists from another longstanding Colorado opera house come together in union. AGMA looks forward to welcoming these artists, and supporting them at every stage,” said Griff Braun, AGMA’s National Organizing Director.

The organizing artists said, “The artists of Opera Colorado are excited to rekindle our relationship with AGMA as we move forward together into this next phase of the company's history. By coming together in union, we look forward to securing the best possible opportunities for our artists and for the organization for many years to come.”

Opera Colorado was founded in 1981. IATSE Local no. 7 represents most of the Company's production and technical staff. According to the Company’s website, its nationally recognized Artist in Residence Program trains the next generation of opera performers, and the Company reaches more than 45,000 students and adults each year through its statewide education and community programs.

AGMA has officially notified Opera Colorado management with the hopes that the Company will respect its artists’ wishes and voluntarily recognize the Union. The Company has until close of business tomorrow, May 23, 2023, to discuss next steps. AGMA will release more information as it becomes available.
