Chicago Opera Theatre (COT) seeks an experienced Stage Manager for two productions in our 2026/27 season:

  • The Importance of Being Earnest
    Rehearsals begin November 2, 2026
    Final performance December 6, 2026

  • The Juniper Tree
    Rehearsals begin April 19, 2027
    Final performance May 23, 2027

Both productions will be presented at the Studebaker Theater in Chicago’s Fine Arts Building.

Position Overview

The Stage Manager will work closely with the Production Manager, artistic staff, designers, performers, and crew to support all rehearsal and performance operations throughout the production process.

The Importance of Being Earnest will be produced without chorus, while The Juniper Tree will include a small chorus and young performers. The Juniper Tree is anticipated to be a co-production originated by Chicago Opera Theatre.

Assistant Stage Manager positions have been filled for both productions.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Professional opera and/or theatrical stage management experience

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Experience calling complex cueing sequences and managing rehearsal processes

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced production environment

  • Experience working with chorus and/or young performers preferred

Local Chicago-based stage managers are strongly encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • AGMA membership will be required for employment

  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States

Compensation

Pending AGMA ratification in upcoming negotiations, compensation is expected to reflect a 4% increase over the current AGMA weekly rate, for an anticipated weekly rate of approximately $1,720.63.
