Upcoming 2025 Basic Annual Dues: A Message from AGMA President Ned Hanlon

November 14, 2024

With the new year approaching, it’s almost time for us AGMA members to submit our 2025 AGMA Basic Annual Dues. Starting in the next week or so, members will receive dues statements for the year ahead.

I’ve been a proud, dues-paying member of AGMA since singing in Carmen at Detroit Opera in 2009. As AGMA President, yes, I do still pay my dues and, in fact, I couldn’t be in my position if I didn’t, so I want to emphasize the vital need for members to maintain good standing status. This means staying up to date on all payments and installment plans. Only when we are in good standing can we actively participate at every level of the Union. To engage in negotiations, vote on contracts, attend caucus or committee meetings, receive important email updates, access MyAGMA, and to vote, nominate, or run as a candidate in elections, such as the Board of Governor elections we have this spring, members must remain in good standing.

I have to admit, I don’t love talking about dues. It’s not as fun as rallying at a picket line or fighting for increased funding for the performing arts, but it’s just as important a topic. It’s what allows us as AGMA to stand together in solidarity, beholden to no one but ourselves, because we don’t accept money from outside interests.

The strength we are building is making a difference. This year, we’ve defended artists-worker rights coast to coast – from San Francisco to Dallas to New York. Our fight for justice across the nation has earned AGMA national recognition. AGMA has appeared on prominent stages beyond our usual opera, ballet, and concert venues this year, even visiting the White House multiple times, and continues to lead in advancing protections for artists nationwide.

From our Board of Governors, Area Chairs, Delegates, and Caucus Leaders, to both longtime and newly joined members, AGMA artists have been at the forefront of these major victories and milestones. Our efforts, backed by AGMA’s dedicated and skilled professional staff, continue to drive our union’s strength and progress. Not to mention, AGMA has streamlined its operations and improved technology over the last year, making us better equipped than ever to connect with current and prospective members, union siblings, and arts organizations. None of this happens without dues.

The remaining weeks of the year are going to sneak up on us. Please ensure your dues are up to date as we forge ahead together. Your fellow artists need you!

Solidarity Forever!

Ned Hanlon, AGMA President
