Portland Opera is thrilled to hear local singers to join our incredible Chorus. Candidates will be considered for open Regular and Alternate Chorister positions for Soprano, Mezzo, and Tenor sections. There are no current openings in the Bass-Baritone section but we welcome Bass-Baritone singers to audition for future consideration. Portland Opera encourages artists from all backgrounds and ethnicities to audition. This is a paid opportunity – compensation terms are governed by Portland Opera’s Collective Bargaining Agreement with AGMA (American Guild of Musical Artists: https://www.musicalartists.org/)
Candidates should prepare and memorize two selections in different languages, one of which must be an opera aria in Italian, German, or French. The remaining selection may be an art song or an oratorio excerpt. An accompanist will be provided; auditionees may bring their own pianist if desired.
The Chorus Master may request musical, vocal, and/or linguistic adjustments from the singer during the audition as a method of determining a candidate's responsiveness to musical direction.
Auditions are evaluated on the following criteria:
- a demonstrated level of musicianship with attention to correct pitch, rhythm,
dynamics, phrasing, and interpretation - solid vocal technique
- appropriate diction in the common operatic languages
- large enough sound to carry in the performance venue(s)
- an appropriate choral sound according to the artistic standard of Portland Opera
- the ability to blend the voice
- stage presence
- dramatic sensibility
