The California-based Singers of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale(PBOC) have signed cards to form a union and join the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA).

"Unionizing is increasingly recognized by performing artists as the key to securing safety, equity, and sustainability within their industries,” said Griff Braun, AGMA’s National Organizing Director. “AGMA wholeheartedly supports the PBOC artists who are making this courageous decision and will stand beside them every step of the way.”

Since its formation in 1995, the Chorale has brought performances of great musical finesse, finely-honed stylistic vocalism, and enormous vitality to audiences in the Bay Area and beyond.

The Artists of the Chorale have sent their own letter to the PBOC management. A part of the letter reads, “Forming our union with AGMA will strengthen and enhance our working relationship with the management of PBOC. Building on the successes of the past 28 years, we are committed to supporting the present and future success of PBOC, and to further developing the Chorale’s reputation as a magnet for singers with superb vocal technique, musicianship, and understanding of historically informed performance.”

AGMA has officially notified the PBOC management, with the hope that they will respect their artists’ wishes and voluntarily recognize the Union. The Company has until 5:00 p.m. PT on Thursday, November 9 to respond.

AGMA will release more information as it becomes available.
